The Topeka Performing Arts Center boasts a storied history in Topeka, Kansas. Originally opened as the Municipal Auditorium in 1940, it has hosted a diverse range of events, from sporting events and circuses to trade shows and Broadway productions. Its stage has seen performances by legends like Count Basie, Elvis Presley, Nat King Cole, Imogene Coca, and more.
In the mid-1980s, the venue underwent a significant renovation, transforming it into a state-of-the-art theater. Reopened in 1991 as the Topeka Performing Arts Center, its main theater, the Georgia Neese Gray Performance Hall, now features enhanced acoustics, a reconfigured hall with curved loges (box seats), a curved balcony, a sloped floor, and improved sightlines. The TPAC orchestra pit includes an orchestra lift, a large elevator floor that can be adjusted to various levels within the pit. The backstage area is equipped with eight dressing rooms and a green room.
With a seating capacity of 2,417, the main auditorium continues to host a wide array of live entertainment performances. Beyond the performing arts, the venue’s Lower Level houses Hill’s Festival Hall, offering 6,500 square feet of usable space for banquets and meetings.
