The Paramount Theater of Ashland, located in Ashland, Kentucky, is a stunning example of Art Deco architecture and a cherished cultural landmark in the Ohio Valley. Originally opened on September 5, 1931, as the Paramount Theater, this historic venue was designed to showcase the latest in cinematic innovation—“talking pictures.” While initially planned as a silent film house, the arrival of “talkies” during its construction led to a redesign, making the Paramount one of the first transitional theaters in the country. Its artistic design, crafted by the renowned Rapp and Rapp, was even featured at the Chicago World’s Fair in 1932. Today, the Paramount Theater of Ashland has been meticulously preserved and restored, allowing visitors to step back in time and experience the grandeur of its original 1931 opening night.
The venue is dedicated to inspiring, educating, and entertaining audiences through outstanding performing arts and diverse cultural experiences. With seating for 1,417 guests, the Paramount hosts an average of 120 performances annually, attracting approximately 250,000 attendees and generating an economic impact of over $6 million for the community. The center’s mission is deeply rooted in celebrating Appalachian traditions while broadening the region’s cultural horizons through interdisciplinary arts and humanities programming.
The Paramount Theater of Ashland is proud to serve as a hub for local and community programming, including performances by the Paramount Players, a talented group of regional artists. The center also places a strong emphasis on educational opportunities, with 89 percent of its events focusing on youth engagement in the tri-state area. From concerts and theatrical productions to community events and outreach programs, the Paramount continues to enrich the lives of residents and visitors alike.
Stepping through the brass entrance doors of the Paramount Theater of Ashland is like stepping into history. The venue retains many of its original fixtures and furnishings, offering a timeless experience that connects the past with the present. Whether attending a live performance, participating in a community event, or simply admiring the architectural beauty of this historic landmark, the Paramount Theater provides an unforgettable cultural experience for all.
