Reviving History: The Glorious Legacy of Evansville's Victory Theatre

The Victory Theatre, located in Evansville, Indiana, opened its doors in 1921 and boasts a seating capacity of 1,950. Serving as the home of the Evansville Philharmonic Orchestra, the theatre also accommodates local ballet and modern dance companies, theatre groups, and touring productions. Located across the street from the Ford Center, the Victory Theatre is managed in conjunction with the Ford Center. The theatre shares its building with Signature School, a school that emphasizes rigor and excellence in academics, the arts, integrated technologies, and community service. The Victory Theatre staff collaborates closely with the school to host various functions, classes, and performances.

In the 1920s, the Victory Theatre featured a daily program that included four vaudeville acts, a movie, a comedy routine, organ music, and a ten-piece orchestra. Notably, in 1928, it showcased Evansville’s first "talking picture" movie. After a $15 million renovation, the theatre was meticulously restored and reopened in 1998. Efforts to replicate and restore the original marquee, a historical piece that once illuminated Main Street, have been ongoing for decades. Recently, the VenuWorks team in Evansville led a successful fundraising campaign that resulted in the installation of a historically accurate new marquee.

Lora Melone

Lora Melone was born and raised in Marshall, TX. She began her career with VenuWorks of Evansville in October 2011, starting as a part-time suites and catering supervisor during the opening of the Ford Center. In December 2016, she transitioned to Operations as the Event Coordinator of Victory Theatre. In September 2021, following the Covid pandemic, Lora became the Production Manager at the Ford Center . By April 2022, she had advanced to the position of Director of Victory Theatre.

Lora grew up playing piano and participating in band percussion, fostering an extreme love for music and a passion for concerts and events. Over her 12-year tenure at VenuWorks, she discovered her talent for event management, which has become a significant passion in her life. Notably, Lora holds the rare distinction among veteran staff members of being the only part-time employee to advance through the ranks to a director position.
