PELHAM – Kindergarten students from Pelham Ridge Elementary School and Pelham Oaks Elementary School recently laced up their skates and took to the rink at the Pelham Civic Complex and Ice Arena as part of their physical education curriculum.
The skating initiative, which began in 2023, continues to give Pelham’s youngest learners the opportunity to experience ice skating in their hometown—something many students might not otherwise have the chance to try.
The program was first proposed by Seth Greenberg, executive director of the civic complex, who brought the idea to Pelham City Manager Gretchen DiFante with a simple goal: introduce local students to skating while utilizing one of the city’s premier recreational facilities. With support from Pelham City Schools and funding secured through a community action grant from State Sen. April Weaver and State Reps. Kenneth Paschal and Arnold Mooney of the Shelby County Legislative Delegation, the program became a reality.
The city of Pelham and the civic complex—managed by VenuWorks—have invested nearly $6,000 to cover ice time and skate rentals for the full program. Grant funding helps offset coaching and transportation costs. Through the partnership, kindergarteners participate in structured skating lessons led by arena instructors, learning foundational skills while building balance, coordination and confidence on the ice.
City officials said the initiative reflects strong collaboration between the city of Pelham, Pelham City Schools, VenuWorks and the Shelby County Legislative Delegation. Organizers say the program not only introduces students to a new sport, but also creates lasting memories and encourages them to try new experiences. For many of the students, stepping onto the ice represents a first-time experience—one made possible through community partnerships and local investment.
Officials expressed gratitude to everyone involved in continuing the program and providing Pelham’s youngest learners with the opportunity to build confidence and develop new skills in a unique setting.
